The Eternal Marketing Message from This Forgettable Western

Did you realize how eternal the message from this bounty-hunters’ Western movie is?

Last weekend, I was watching Gary Cooper’s ‘Garden of Evil’ (1954).

Typical western setting. Small town. Difficult times.

Two guys are sitting in a bar.

And a beautiful lady is singing in Spanish.

One man, who doesn’t understand Spanish, remarks. “I found that pretty women speak the same language all over the world.”

“What about the ugly ones?” asks the other man.

“Never listened.” quips the first.

The comments could appear sexist by today’s standards.

But if you change the lines only a bit, it turns into one of the biggest secrets of great ads.

Customer: “I found that great ads speak the same language all over the world.”

Advertiser: “What about the bad ones?”

Customer: “Never paid attention.”
